The pro-Russian candidate for the presidency of Romania, Calin Georgescu, referred to Ukraine as a "fictional state." He also expressed opinions on which territories should belong to Romania.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing Romania TV and the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, Andrei Kovalenko.
"The world is changing. Borders will change. Moreover, if borders change, where do we stand? So, we have Northern Bukovina, we have Budjak, we have Northern Maramureș from the former Transcarpathia, what remains of the Hungarians, Lviv, which will remain with the Poles, and Little Russia..." - Georgescu stated in an interview.
Additionally, when asked if he believes in the division of Ukrainian territories after a peace treaty, Georgescu asserted that it is inevitable, as he views Ukraine as a "fictional state."
"One hundred percent it will happen. Well, they have no other choice. The path to something like this is unavoidable. Ukraine is a fictional state. The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic," he declared.
The presidential candidate of Romania believes that his country should reclaim territories that were once part of the kingdom. At the same time, he stated that he does not wish for territorial expansion, but that it is worth seizing the opportunity.
The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, Andrei Kovalenko, wrote that pro-Russian politicians, like the Romanian (Calin Georgescu - ed.), who begin to speak about some "division of Ukraine" only accelerate the discussion about the necessity of dividing Russia and the success of national formations on the territory of the current Russian Federation.
"Because an aggressive empire that offers 'division of the world' in the languages of others does not inspire trust and only strengthens the thoughts and voices of those who believe it is right to support the creation of national formations on the still existing territory of Russia to reduce global threats," Kovalenko wrote.
In the presidential elections of November 2024, independent candidate Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round, securing 23%. He is regarded as an ultra-right politician with pro-Russian views. The Office of the President of Romania reported intelligence data indicating external influence on the elections.
The Constitutional Court annulled the results due to information regarding illegal campaign financing and potential interference from Russia. Intelligence reported a covert campaign on TikTok, 85,000 cyberattacks, and other hybrid actions. Georgescu violated electoral legislation by claiming zero expenses, despite spending 1 million euros on TikTok videos alone.
Leaders of the Romanian government coalition parties agreed on a new election date - May 4, 2025. If a winner is not determined in the first round, the second round will take place on May 18.
It is still unknown whether Calin Georgescu will remain a presidential candidate. His participation in the elections will depend on the decision of the Constitutional Court, which may disqualify him due to the allegations.
