Canada has implemented new sanctions against Russia. These will affect 31 Russian individuals and paramilitary groups that support aggression against Ukraine.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine, citing the office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The introduction of new sanctions against Russia is a result of Trudeau's participation in the summit of European leaders in London regarding Ukraine.
"During the summit 'Securing Our Future,' the Prime Minister announced new sanctions against 10 individuals and 21 legal entities, including paramilitary organizations and their leaders, to assist in countering Russia's use of proxy organizations and countries to advance its political and military objectives in Ukraine," the Trudeau office stated.
The office reported that the new sanctions target nine leaders of post-Wagner paramilitary organizations and one member of the associated senior Russian military leadership. The sanctions also aim at nine paramilitary organizations operating in Ukraine and within the Kremlin's African network, along with 12 related organizations.
"Overall, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 3,000 individuals and organizations involved in Russia's aggression. Canada is firmly committed to continuing to work with partners to increase economic pressure on Russia," the statement from the Canadian government leader said.
A paramilitary organization or semi-military organization is a formation that has a military character or is closely related to it but is not formally part of the armed forces. It is an organized group of civilians, either in military uniforms or civilian clothing, used to assist the regular army.
As a reminder, today at the summit in London, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that his country is considering all possible options for supporting peace in Ukraine, including dispatching Canadian troops as part of an international contingent.
According to the Prime Minister, Canada "has been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine from the very beginning." He noted that his country has already trained "up to 40,000 Ukrainian soldiers."
"We will not rush into discussions about achieving a peace that does not yet exist, but Canada will be present and open to everything that is necessary," Trudeau emphasized.
