The largest act of clemency in modern U.S. history. American President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 individuals.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing CNN.
Biden announced that he is commuting the sentences of approximately 1,500 individuals and pardoning 39 people who were convicted of non-violent offenses.
White House officials describe this move as the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.
The president, who earlier this month pardoned his son Hunter, also promised that additional actions would be announced in the coming weeks.
"America was built on the promise of opportunities and second chances. As president, I have the great privilege of showing mercy to those who have demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation," Biden said.
Sources reported that nearly 1,500 individuals whose lengthy sentences were commuted had been placed under house arrest during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it was believed that they had shown a clear commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration into their communities.
At the same time, the 39 pardoned individuals had been convicted of non-violent crimes and were considered to have made significant contributions to the country.
"These are people who have found jobs, pursued education, cared for their children and family members, and truly reintegrated into the fabric of their communities," a representative of the administration said.
It is worth noting that on Sunday U.S. President Joe Biden announced that he pardoned his son Hunter Biden. This month, he was set to be sentenced for crimes related to illegal possession of firearms and tax evasion.
